Quick hits: Krug evens things up with second period tally

    Second period quick hits:

For a second straight night, the Bruins fought back from another deficit. Down 1-0, Torey Krug nodded the score at 1-1 early on in the second period as he banged home a David Pastrnak rebound. The play started back in their own end as David Krejci made a nifty play from his knees to get the rush going. Milan Lucic then crashed the net along with Krug while Pastrnak sped up ice where the puck found the defenseman who buried it past Varlamov. It was Krug’s ninth goal of the season. Lucic recorded his 16th assist while Pastrnak received his second.

The Bruins penalty kill stood tall yet again killing two 5-on-3 penalties due to two delay of game calls, one on Rask and the other on Adam McQuaid. That was McQuaid’s fourth penalty in the last two nights. Kevan Miller was also whistled for a questionable hooking call to add to the fun. The B’s are a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill through two periods and have now killed 37 of 39 penalties in the month of January.

The second period has been the Black and Gold’s toughest frame all season long. With Krug’s goal, they have increased their plus/minus in the second period to plus-1. It’s the first time in a very long time that the B’s have a positive output in the middle frame. That’s three goals in their last two second periods.

Lucic has been all over the ice through two periods. He’s moving his feet very well and skating end to end to make plays. He showed great net drive on Krug’s tying goal and has shown great physicality to this point. Lucic has an assist, a plus-1 rating, has recorded two hits and one blocked shot in 9:22 of ice time.

Tuukka Rask has been great yet again in this back-to-back situation. He has 16 saves on through two periods including three huge saves during the B’s run of penalty kills. This is refreshing for Rask, who is 0-2-1 this season in back to back games.
