Coyotes claim Craig Cunningham off of waivers

While we still wait to see if Peter Chiarelli to make another move (or more) before the 3 p.m. trade deadline, the Bruins parted ways with one of their own thanks to the waiver wire.

Just a few moments ago, the Arizona Coyotes claimed Craig Cunningham off of waivers, as well as Jamie McGinn from the San Jose Sharks.

With Chiarelli looking to add pieces, Cunningham was placed on waivers to make room for additions like Brett Connolly, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning early Monday morning. With Brian Ferlin performing well recently, Cunningham was the odd man out for the waiver wire.

Cunningham showed glimpses of potential as a fourth line winger along with Daniel Paille and Gregory Campbell. But the 24-year old’s ice time diminished in the last 10 games before being listed as a healthy scratch on February 20th against the St. Louis Blues. He hasn’t played since February 18th against the Oilers.

In 32 games with the Bruins, Cunningham has two goals and one assist.

Instant analysis: If Chiarelli based this on the recent play of Ferlin, I would’ve understood it. But Jordan Caron is still on the roster and really hasn’t improved all that much even with Ferlin and Chris Kelly as his linemates the last few games. Matt Fraser was claimed from Edmonton earlier in the season as well. Even if there was a minimal return for Fraser and Cunningham, it would’ve been better than losing them for nothing. Still, Cunningham will have an expanded role with the Coyotes, who are in sell mode, as Fraser has with Edmonton.
