Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Flames

The newly looked Boston Bruins will take the ice for the first time since the Trading deadline tonight at TD Garden against the Calgary Flames.

The Bruins haven’t played since their 4-1 rout of the Arizona Coyotes and will look to make it three in a row and four of five to set the pace for the eighth spot in the Eastern conference.

Claude Julien’s team will play the Flames for the second time in less than a month. The first time, the B’s dominated for two periods. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 3-1 after two periods, but the Flames proved why they were one of the best third period teams in the NHL. Jiri Hudler notched two goals and TJ Brodie scored the game-winner in OT to shock Tuukka Rask and the B’s in one of the strangest finishes to date for the Black and Gold.

With the B’s holding a two point lead over the Panthers for the eighth spot in the East (with two games in hand), each game becomes bigger with less than 20 games to play.

The Flames are in the same predicament tied with the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks for the eighth seed in the West.

In injury news, the B’s will be without newcomer Brett Connolly as he suffered a fractured right index finger in practice Wednesday afternoon. Gregory Campbell will also still be out, but could return by the weekend.

Who to watch for Bruins: Reilly Smith

It seemed as if all the trade talks have gotten to Reilly Smith. A restricted free agent at the end of year, his time in Boston is not guaranteed. He is playing for security as well as a pay check.

Over his last seven games, the 23 year-old has been on one of those hot streaks that we have seen over the past two years. Smith has two goals and six assists over that span to go along with plus-6 rating.

In his last game against the Coyotes, Smith contributed with two assists and was a part of the best line for the Black and Gold on the night. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand added a goal and an assist each in the win as well. The Bergeron line is clicking yet again and Smith is a main reason why.

Who to watch for Flames: Jiri Hudler

Hudler gave the B’s headaches the first time these two teams met by scoring two goals single-handedly bringing his team back into the game.

On Tuesday night, the 31 year-old tallied an assist and scored the game-winner in the Flames’ in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 5-foot-10 center leads the Flames with 20 goals and 30 assists on the season and is a very quick forward that the B’s blue liners need to be aware of, especially in the third period.

Game Day Edge: Play with fire

The last time these two teams met, the B’s came out smoking. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and were playing their style of hockey. Julien’s bunch were laying hits, establishing a good forecheck and getting pucks in deep until the third period. In that third period, the Black and Gold took the foot off the gas and allowed the Flames to take it to them to tie the game and eventually win in overtime. They weren’t playing with the edge they did in the opening 20 minutes or the first half of the second period.

Putting together that 60-minute effort has been a recurring problem all year for the Black and Gold. Tonight, the B’s will need to find a way to make that happen, because a three goal lead wasn’t enough to beat this team last time and it won’t be this time either.
