Bruins fans were holding their breath when Patrice Bergeron left the Air Canada Centre Saturday with a walking boot on his left foot. They breathed a sigh of relief the very next day when he was in the lineup against the Sabres in Buffalo less than 24 hours later.

That, along with Rick Nash’s debut, might have been the only good news to come out of Buffalo. Less than 48 hours later, however, the Hub of Hockey is back holding their breath following the latest Bergeron development.

Late Tuesday morning — following their morning skate — the Bruins announced that their four-time Selke Trophy winner will be out for at least the next two weeks with a small foot fracture. Bergeron will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

From the team’s official announcement (via the team’s official website)

The injury occurred while blocking a shot during the team’s game in Toronto on February 24. Following the game, Bergeron had an x-ray that was negative. Bergeron played through some discomfort in the team’s game in Buffalo on February 25. Therefore, the Bruins medical staff determined it was best to have a secondary, more definitive CT scan on Monday in Boston, which revealed a small fracture.

Riley Nash took Bergeron’s spot as the top line center at the morning skate. David Backes moves from wing to center on the third line while, Tommy Wingels, who was acquired from the Blackhawks in a last-minute deal at Monday’s trade deadline, will make his Black and Gold debut on the third line with Backes and Danton Heinen.

Here’s a look at Bruce Cassidy’s projected lineup for their 7 p.m. contest with the Carolina Hurricanes to begin their six-game homestand:

    Brad Marchand-Riley Nash-David Pastrnak
    Jake DeBrusk-David Krejci-Rick Nash
    Danton Heinen-David Backes-Tommy Wingels
    Tim Schaller-Sean Kuraly-Noel Acciari

    Zdeno Chara-Charlie McAvoy
    Torey Krug-Brandon Carlo
    Matt Grzelcyk-Kevan Miller

    Tuukka Rask
    Anton Khudobin
