Fast start for Bruins crucial as tough schedule lies ahead

In the midst of an eventful week, the Boston Bruins have some familiarity with how their roster will shake out for tomorrow night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers in their season opener.

With Johnny Boychuk now in Long Island, Jarome Iginla with the Avalanche and David Pastrnak assigned to Providence, the B’s know where they lie with the depth of their team. They will be tested early and often as they kick off their 2014 season with seven games in 11 days. Sure, most of the “core” group is still here, but who will replace Iginla’s production on that first line? Which defenseman will be a healthy scratch each night?

With some of these questions lingering, Bruins center Patrice Bergeron preaches that the team must stick to their system as well as getting off to a fast start to silence the background noise.

“I feel good with the team we have,” Bergeron said at Media day held at TD Garden on Tuesday morning. “Yeah, we have new guys, but it doesn’t change our system or our attitude so we will approach this season the same way as last year.”

Bergeron was satisfied with the preseason the team had and he is ready for the grueling schedule to start the season.

“We feel good and we need to take it a game at a time,” Bergeron said. “We will be pretty busy, but sometimes that’s a good thing because that usually means it’ll slow down a bit.”

When asked about getting off to that fast start in those seven games in 11 days Bergeron agreed that it’s crucial to come out of the gate fast so they can play their brand of hockey.

“Yeah, it’s really important especially when you have so many games in a short period of time early you don’t have time to ease into it, it’s about making sure that you feel good right away and put up wins.”

Owner Jeremy Jacobs also commented on the first few weeks of the season and his expectations of his team moving forward.

“I always put a lot of stake in them a lot more than others do,” Jacobs said. “I’d like to see us win and win all the time, but the realities are is that doesn’t always happen, but I would like to see us come out strong. Last year we came out fairly strong then we went down a little bit then we came back up and had a terrific run.”

Bergeron’s line mate thinks a lot like his teammate as Brad Marchand made it clear the team (as well as he) needs to go on a good run early on to keep their heads above water.

“Yeah, you always want to start the season on a good note and try to get on a roll early and get the momentum and confidence up,” Marchand said. “But to do that, you have to take it one game at a time especially with seven in the first 11 days. You need to make sure you are prepared for each one and you can’t go into one saying ‘It’s okay if we lose we play tomorrow’ we want to make sure we take each game as serious as we can and make sure we are prepared for it and get it rolling.”

The Black and Gold know how important fast starts are in seasons and in games. With the veteran leadership and talented youth, the B’s have the roster to make it happen even without Boychuk, Iginla or Pastrnak.

The healthy competition that Claude Julien talked about at Media Day is good for everybody. It pushes each player to the brink. The B’s look to push the Flyers to the brink tomorrow night at TD Garden to start the season off on the right foot.
