Former defenseman Steve Montador, who played in 531 career NHL games (33 goals, 98 assists, 807 penalty minutes), including a brief stint with the Boston Bruins in 2009, was found dead early Sunday morning in his home at Mississauga, Ontario at the age of 35.

According to a report by the Peel Regional Police (from The Mississauga News), a female friend woke up and found Montador laying down motionless at 2 a.m. The police rushed up to the home and pronounced him deceased at 2:30 a.m.

Foul play was not expected to play a role in the death. An autopsy is pending.

Renaud Lavoie of TVA was the first to tweet out the news this morning:

The former Bruin suffered a concussion during the 2011-12 season while playing with the Chicago Blackhawks. He attempted to make a comeback the following season after battling depression and dealt with other post-concussion symptoms, before the team bought out his contract shortly after their Stanley Cup victory in 2013.

“I can see why people have a hard time with a number of different things and being taken away from something they love to do and not sure if you’d ever get back the chance. There’s a lot of uncertainty, a lot of fear, a lot of anxiety and depression that comes with that,” Montador told Tracey Myers of CSN Chicago in March, 2013. “I’ve had a lot of help to work through that and I feel like I’ve taken the right steps.”

Montador was acquired by the Bruins at the 2009 trade deadline from the Anaheim Ducks to help bolster the team’s depth at defense. Additionally, he had stints with the Flames (from 2001-2005), Panthers (2005-2008), Sabres (2009-2011) and most recently the Blackhawks (2011-12). He last suited up professionally in 11 games for Medvescak Zagreb in the KHL during the 2013-14 campaign.

The late Montador also suited up in 43 career playoff games where he tallied 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists).
