Game day Preview: Avalanche at Bruins

The Boston Bruins will look to get back on track today after dropping their last two games as Jarome Iginla and the Colorado Avalanche come to town for a Columbus Day matinee. The Black and Gold had a tough go of it on Saturday night losing to the Washington Capitals 4-0 at TD Garden. After missing the team’s first three games of the season, first-line center David Krejci could be making his 2014 debut today, but that remains to be seen. The B’s and Avalanche split the season series last year at one game apiece, each team winning by a score of 2-0 away from home.

Who to watch for Bruins: Milan Lucic

He came off wrist surgery in the off season, but it is no excuse for a player of his caliber. We are use to Lucic’s slow starts to the season, but this has been tough to watch. It may have something to do with the absence of David Krejci, but he needs to make something happen on his own. Lucic has only one shot on goal and zero points on the year. Most importantly, the physicality hasn’t been there for Lucic. Maybe he is still nervous about his wrist landing the wrong way, but if the Black and Gold want production from Lucic, it starts with his physicality and fore checking which in the past has led to him scoring.

Who to watch for Avalanche: Jarome Iginla

He may have been here only for one year, but the impression Iginla left on the fans and his former teammates will always be remembered. He is a future Hall-of-Famer who has a knack for finding the back of the net. It’s been tough so far for the entire Avs team as they have zero goals for and eight against. Iginla has an even rating with just two shots on goal which is remarkable compared to ratings of his teammates. Nine of his teammates have a rating of minus-3 or minus-4 to start the season.

Game day Edge: Fast start for Bruins crucial against Avalanche

The Bruins do not want to be the team to give the Avs their first win of the season. The Avs are not playing that great of hockey right now, but neither are the Bruins. It is imperative that the Black and Gold come out and set the tone early on a team that may be pressing. Patrick Roy’s bunch has yet to score a goal in the 2014 season, so for the Bruins to get on the board early will be crucial. By scoring first, the B’s can play their brand of hockey. Saturday night against the Capitals the B’s just couldn’t get comfortable nor score a goal. For the Bruins it’s about keeping the foot on the gas pedal against the Avs. It’s been tough sledding for this team and by building a lead in front of your home crowd could spell trouble for Jarome Iginla and company.
