Bruins second line continues to gel

On a night where David Krejci was absent again from the Boston Bruins lineup, certain players know when they need to step up.

Monday evening, it was Patrice Bergeron leading his line to a monster night against the New Jersey Devils in a 4-2 victory.

With all the hype surrounding Seth Griffith’s highlight reel goal (as there should be), Bergeron created the scoring chance for Carl Soderberg who then buried a power-play goal to even the score at one in the first period.

Later on in the first period, Bergeron created a turnover and then riffled a shot between the five-hole of Cory Schneider to give the Black and Gold a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. After Jaromir Jagr tied it and Griffith played “Superman”, Bergeron then found Reilly Smith to give the B’s some breathing room at 4-2. It was Bergeron’s ninth assist of the season to take the team lead away from Soderberg.

It looked as if all night the Bergeron line was clicking on all cylinders. They had great jump in their step tonight from Bergeron, to Smith to Brad Marchand. Head coach Claude Julien believes the chemistry is coming back and it showed on Smith’s goal to end the second period.

“I think you’re seeing a lot of good chemistry coming back that you saw last year, they’re finding each other, they seem to be more in sync, not getting caught in some deep areas, three guys,” Julien said after his team’s fifth straight win. “They’re reading off each other well. Even that goal right at the end of the second period was a big goal for us. We go into the dressing room up two instead of one. Great play by Bergeron to find Smith on that.”

Smith, who tallied a goal and an assist, is starting to find his game after a dry spell early on due to his shortened training camp. He also believes his line is starting to find their groove.

“Yeah, I felt like the last few games we have done a good job, you know moving the puck and seeing each other,” Smith said. “A little more points to the puck I think we’ve, you know, this home stand, I think every game we are getting a little bit better with each other and making better plays, so I hope it continues.”

Bergeron, who really led the attack tonight from start to finish pointed out Smith’s forecheck on his goal that gave the B’s the lead in the first period.

“Yeah, it was a great fore-check by, I think, Smitty was the first guy on there,” Bergeron said. “That was me trying to read that fore-check and try to be aggressive enough too. I was lucky enough to get that puck and try to go quick in five-hole.”

Chris Kelly noticed the production out of the Bergeron-line tonight and added this line usually defends the team’s top line.

“Yeah, they’re a great line,” Kelly said. “They play against all the other team’s top lines and not only do they make it difficult for those top players on other teams, but they contribute as well. That’s huge. I think when you’ve got your top line being the best line and the other lines contributing, it makes things a lot easier on everyone.”

Bergeron, Smith and Marchand combined for five points, six shots, and a plus-2 rating. It was evident from the start that this line stood out the most. They had good feel for one another and it’s been like that during the B’s five-game win streak.
