Player of the Week: December 22nd-28th

There were not too many bright spots for the Boston Bruins over the past week. One can argue that Loui Eriksson has found his groove, but another player that is starting to turn another corner is Patrice Bergeron.

Bergeron ended the week with one goal and three assists with a plus-3 rating in two games played against the Nashville Predators and Columbus Blue Jackets. In a must-win game last Tuesday night, Bergeron put on a show stuffing the stat sheet against the Predators with his three assists. He also won 63 percent of his face-offs while playing upwards of 18 minutes during the contest.

The second line center was in the middle of the five goal performance against the Predators and admitted that the team created more scoring chances due to the effectiveness out of their end.

“I think we’re sharp in our zone and I thought we were first on pucks and we created a lot of turnovers by moving our feet and being close to each other,” Bergeron said after his team’s 5-3 win over the Predators. “When we do that then we keep rolling like that, we have some odd-man rushes and chances.”

Brad Marchand, Bergeron’s linemate, knows the center gave their line a big boost with his playmaking Saturday night.

“Yeah, he was great,” Marchand said. “I mean he’s one of the top players in the league and when he’s on his game, he’s always making great plays and he did that again tonight. When he’s on it allows the rest of our team to go, so hopefully he can continue to play the way he has the last 12 years.”

Bergeron followed up that performance with a goal against the Blue Jackets that tied that game at 1-1 in the first period. It was a great move made by Bergeron that was forgot about in the 6-2 loss on Saturday. The 29 year-old won 50 percent of his face-offs in this one while only playing 12:25 due to an injury and the lob-sided score.

In a year the B’s were decimated by injuries, Bergeron tried to pick up the slack. In 36 games played, he leads the Black and Gold with 27 points including seven goals and 20 assists. His plus-6 rating ranks him tied for third on the team.

It will certainly be tough to beat his 62 point campaign from a year ago (30 goals, 32 assists), but Bergeron is starting to find his groove again. This may be the result of David Krejci returning to the lineup, which creates more stability on all four lines.

It’s well known that Bergeron is one of the most important pieces to the Black and Gold. His three-zone play is next to none in the NHL and if the B’s want to turn the corner, Bergeron needs to continue stuffing the stat sheet.
