Quick hits: Marchand gives Bruins 1-0 lead after 40

    Second period quick hits

Neither team toned down the physicality in the second period, but one team finally found their way on the scoreboard. With 2:40 left in the middle stanza, Brad Marchand, who’s been creating chances all night, found the back of the net for the 14th time this season to give the Black and Gold a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.

The Bruins wouldn’t be in this position, though, if it weren’t for Tuukka Rask. After taking a shot to the head from Jeff Carter, Rask recovered and made a huge stop on Nick Shore on a breakaway. Shore split Dennis Seidenberg and Adam McQuaid en route to the breakaway so I’m sure they’ll do something to thank their goalie. That Seidenberg-McQuaid pairing, however, might need to be split up as both are skating on their heels.

With the Bruins in the attacking end, Patrice Bergeron took an uncharacteristic tripping penalty in front of Jonathan Quick with 27.5 seconds left in the middle stanza. The Kings will have 1:33 of power play time to start the third, and will also have the benefit of not dealing with the B’s top defensive forward.

In continuing their support for the Patriots the night before the Super Bowl, the TD Garden jumbotron played a montage from their AFC title win over the Indianapolis Colts, which drew a standing ovation. Following that, organist Ron Poster played a rendition of “Josie”, which has become the unofficial Pats anthem.

    First period quick hits

The Kings and Bruins are pretty similar to one another. They bring the physicality, play a heavy game and are tight defensively. That was evident in the first period as the teams were held scoreless after 20 minutes.

Both teams combined for xx shots on goal for the first period, but Tuukka Rask and Jonathan Quick still had to make some key stops. After Rask committed a turnover in his own end midway through the first, the Kings got a good cycle, but the Fin was able to stop those chances, including a big glove save on Jeff Carter off a rebound. Moments later, Quick had to bat a puck in mid air after Daniel Paille’s stop with traffic in front of him. Since then, there hasn’t been much offense generated from either side.

With the teams bringing the hitting, both referees Kelly Sutherland and Marc Joanette are letting the Bruins and Kings play. From Dennis Seidenberg’s hip check on Dustin Brown to Jordan Nolan’s hit to Adam McQuaid, it’s been a good, clean and physical contest.

The Bruins have a 10-6 shots on goal advantage through 20 minutes. Brad Marchand nearly put his team up 1-0 in the final seconds of the first, but he was beat by the buzzer.

When tied after the first period, the Bruins are 10-7-2 and the Kings are 6-2-4.

During warmups, the Bruins showed their support for the Patriots with a red, white and blue Pats winter hat that has the “do your job” slogan etched in there. We’ll have more reaction on the B’s thoughts on the Super Bowl tomorrow morning, but for now, here’s Malcolm Subban sporting one of the hats in warmups.
