Quick hits: Lightning lead 3-1 after first period

The Boston Bruins will look for their first win in their last five tries Sunday evening against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Zach Trotman was inserted into the lineup as Dougie Hamilton is sidelined due to a suspected shoulder injury. David Krejci will also need to wait another day as he still nurses his MCL injury, while Reilly Smith will return to the lineup after his healthy scratch last night. Tuukka Rask started in his 58th game this season.

    First period Quick hits:

    – The Bruins got off to the start they absolutely needed and it took only 33 seconds. Patrice Bergeron started the play and then finished it resulting in his 21st goal of the season and second goal in as many nights. Adam McQuaid and Brad Marchand notched their fifth and 17th assists, respectively.

    – Boston had a chance to build their lead while Reilly Smith drew a penalty, but they could not generate many opportunities on Ben Bishop. Their power-play certainly takes a hit without Hamilton and Krejci, but excuses are for another day. Building a lead is still an issue for Claude Julien’s team.

    – The Lightning struck back right after they killed the B’s power play as Vladislav Namstnikov put home a rebound left by Tuukka Rask for his sixth goal of the season. Again, the B’s could not build a lead on the man advantage and it came back to haunt them as Tampa Bay nodded the score at 1-1. Brenden Morrow (5) and J.T. Brown (4) each recorded the assists.

    – In a stunning turn of events, Steven Stamkos dropped the gloves against Brad Marchand after Marchand unloaded a hit on Valteri Filppula. It didn’t last too long as Stamkos took Marchand down to the ice. It’s not every day you see a 40 goal scorer drop the gloves. It was the second fighting major of Stamkos’ young career.

    – It seemed the decision by Stamkos lit a fire under his team because J.T. Brown gave the Lightning the 2-1 lead on his first goal in 16 games and third goal of the season as he split Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg then beating Rask quickly after. Seconds later,  Anton Stralman gave the Lightning a two goal lead after his bullet of a shot beat Rask. There was a big screen in front of Rask and he never got a glance at the shot. It was two goals in 15 seconds for Tampa Bay who are nearly unbeatable at home.

-The fourth line of Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell and Max Talbot had a tough first period. The trio combined for one shot and a minus-6 rating through just a little over seven combined minutes. Seidenberg, who was on the ice for two goals, also had a tough first period.

    First period stats:

    -Boston leads 14-8 on face-offs

-The B’s have three giveaways to the Lightning’s one

-Each team has blocked six shots
