    Report: Bruins plan April surprise

The Boston Bruins are far from tanking the rest of the 2014-15 season to get one of the top two picks in June’s NHL Entry Draft. But after drafting Tyler Seguin and then trading him to the Stars a few years later, they want to make up for that mistake.

The B’s have five games left in the regular season, and there’s still a shot that the Ottawa Senators, who trail the Black and Gold by three points with a game in hand, can overtake them for the final wild card spot. If that’s the case, Boston will enter the draft lottery with a two percent chance of getting the first overall pick.

Regardless on whether they make the playoffs or not, sources indicate that Peter Chiarelli is going “all in” on acquiring one of the top two picks to select Canadian sensation Connor McDavid or the talented Jack Eichel from Boston University.

“Peter Chiarelli knows that this hasn’t been a good year, and his rumored job scrutiny – even if they make the postseason – has him in desperation mode at this point,” one of the sources told Bruins Daily. “Obviously if they somehow get one of the first two picks in the lottery, his job might be saved. But if they make the playoffs, he’ll be putting all options on the table.

“If they miss the playoffs, the chances on paper are two percent of nabbing the top two picks at that position. But Chiarelli has been known to gamble in the past, and he really likes those two percent odds.”

What could those options be? Would it involve Zdeno Chara, who even at his age would still bring a pretty good return to the table? Could it be rumored trade block names in the past like Milan Lucic, Loui Eriksson and Dennis Seidenberg, who all have to waive no-trade clauses? What about Tuukka Rask, Brad Marchand, or, yes, even Patrice Bergeron?

Obviously no specific names have been mentioned, but with two potential once in a lifetime talents entering this year’s Draft, Chiarelli is going to do everything he can.

“Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel are going to turn around a bottom feeding franchise, but if they somehow go to a team looking for a missing piece, they could make an immediate impact,” the source said. “They’re both very talented and it’s no secret why they’ve been the talk of the league since the summer. They are both worth the hype.”

Another source indicates that Chiarelli’s days may be numbered as GM.

That source stated that the Jacobs family is attempting to lure Wayne Gretzky to come back as the new GM and player coach of the Bruins in 2015-16.

“The ‘Great One’ would be a great role model for some of the young talent now like David Pastrnak and Ryan Spooner,” the source said. “Imagine if McDavid or Eichel come here. Who better to learn from than the greatest hockey player of all time?”

It sounds like an interesting development at Causeway Street. Keep it here on Bruins Daily for updates on this ongoing situation as they circuit the wires.
