Seth Griffith Trying to Fight Off Injury Bug

The date was November 10, 2014. There was just over two minutes left in the second period and the Bruins were in a 2-2 deadlock with New Jersey. Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador fired a shot towards the net from the blue line, but it was blocked by Bruins rookie forward Seth Griffith.

The puck bounced towards center ice where Griffith instantly jumped on it and streaked down the middle of the ice into attacking zone. While trying to ward off Mareck Zidlicky, Salvador’s defense partner, the puck bounced slightly to Griffith’s left. Due to Zidlicky’s stick-work, the play led to a delayed-penalty for hooking, Griffith was spun around 180 degrees. Staying with the play, Griffith found the puck between his legs and, with his back towards New Jersey netminder Cory Schneider, fired home a backhander that would the make every highlight reel for basically the rest of the season.

With that, Bruins fans, at least those who didn’t already know, began to learn the name Seth Griffith. Griffith would go on to play 30 games last season with the B’s, registering six goals and four assists for ten points and a minus-two plus/minus rating.

In a season that would end in disappointment for both the Bruins and their devoted fan base, the promising overall play of Seth Griffith and his ability to put the puck in the back of the net in head-turning fashion (for good measure, look up his goal against Minnesota from last year as well) provided a glimmer of hope for the upcoming years. One could argue that this could have been the year for Griffith to stake his claim as a regular for the Parent Club, and it certainly may have, had the injury bug not reered its ugly head.

While playing in the Bruins’ first exhibition game against the same New Jersey Devils back in September, Griffith suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee. The lower-body injury shelved Griffith for the rest of the training camp and the first several weeks of the Regular Season, forcing the Bruins management to send Griffith back to Providence on October 23. After missing the first five P-Bruins games, Seth Griffith would crack the lineup in seven straight games, registering two goals and four assists and a minus-three overall rating. Things seemed to be going relativley smoothly for the 2012 late-round pick until November 11, when Griffith suffered a concussion during the first period of a road contest at Bridgeport. The injury caused him to miss Providence’s next two games before returning Friday night against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. With Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney in attendance, Griffith finished the night a minus-one with one shot on goal as the Phantoms handed the P-Bruins their seventh straight defeat.

However, with recent call-ups Alexander Khokhlachev and Frank Vatrano going down with injuries, the talk has been that Griffith is next in line to receive the promotion to Boston. Imagine that, injuries may be the reason for Seth Griffith to receive a call-up to the Bruins. Ironic huh?

But if the that is the case, there will be question marks surrounding Griffith. If and when he laces up with Parent Club again, can Seth Griffith show the flashes of brilliance that brought Bruins fans to their feet like he he did at some points last season? And most importantly, can he stay healthy long enough to give himself the chance to do so?
