Brad Marchand earns NHL’s second star of the week

Eight points in three games is always worth recognizing. For Brad Marchand, it means another accolade to another impressive season.

On Monday, prior to the Bruins-Islanders matinee at TD Garden, the NHL named Marchand as one of the three stars of the week.

In the Bruins’ two wins a week ago, Marchand was front and center sparking the Bruins’ offense. The 28-year-old had three points (two goals, one assist) against the Blues and finished the week with a five-point outing (two goals, three assists) against the Flyers.

Marchand’s performance against the Flyers – the 500th game of his NHL career – marked the second time this season where he notched five points in a game. He became the first Bruin to accomplish that feat since Jason Allison in 1997-98.

Prior to the four-game road trip, Marchand had only lit the lamp three times in 15 games. Since then, the first-time all-star scored seven in five games and is two shy of David Pastrnak’s team-leading 19 goals.

As Marchand goes, so do the Bruins, at least that’s what Torey Krug is hoping for.

“He’s had it going all year,” Krug said about Marchand following the B’s 6-3 win over the Flyers on Saturday. “Individually, he’s been flying and making plays and he has the ability to change the game. So, definitively, when he’s going, hopefully our team can mirror that.”

Marchand’s had some luck along the way as seen with his shorthanded goal on Saturday. But that’s not a bad thing as the Bruins keep looking to rack up important points in the standings.

“I think it’s just, that’s how hockey goes sometimes – pucks bounce your way and other times they don’t, you know,” Marchand said after his five-point performance versus Philly. “It is nice when things are going your way, you feel a little more confident, you’re able to do things that you’re a little nervous to try at different times. But again, I think our team’s playing really good hockey right now and everyone’s just playing good.”

Capitals center Nick Backstrom (10 points in four games) and Hurricanes winger Brock McGinn (seven points in three games), earned the NHL’s first and third stars of the week, respectively.
