Brad Marchand suspended two games for spear on Jake Dotchin

Brad Marchand was one of five Bruins to have played in every regular season game in 2016-17. Entering Game 81, that list will be down to four.

To little surprise, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced a two-game suspension for Marchand after his spear on Lightning defenseman Jake Dotchin during Boston’s 4-0 win Tuesday night. Marchand was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the spear that took place with a little under 40 seconds left in the first period.

“Stick infractions are common in the National Hockey League,” the league said in a video statement (which can be seen below). “With some exceptions, the vast majority can be sufficiently penalized by the on-ice officials. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the intent, the amount of force used and Marchand’s substantial history of attacking the lower body of unsuspecting opponents.”

That history of attacking players includes slew foots earlier this year on Niklas Kronwall and Anton Stralman. Marchand earned a $10,000 fine for what the league called an “aggressive trip” on Kronwall and did not receive supplemental discipline for his slew-foot on Stralman one week later.

With the two-game ban, Marchand’s history of supplemental discipline includes 14 games worth of suspensions and another three instances where he got fined.

Marchand, who finishes his regular season with 85 points and one goal shy of 40, will speak to the media at 6:30 tonight – a half hour prior to the Bruins-Senators contest.
