Bruins place Kenny Agostino on waivers

After showing consistency at the AHL level during the first three years of his professional hockey career, Kenny Agostino signed a one-year, one-way deal with the Bruins in the off-season hoping to finally become a regular at the NHL level. That journey will have to wait.

Following his minor injury in the middle of the preseason, the Bruins announced that they have placed Agostino on waivers on Friday. If he clears, Agostino will likely report to Providence to start his 2017-18 season.

Though Agostino showed some potential despite his injury – tallying a goal and two assists in three appearances – the former Yale standout fell victim to a deep pool of young forwards also vying for the final roster spots, including Jake DeBrusk, Anders Bjork, Sean Kuraly and Danton Heinen.

“I think that he was as advertised in terms of he made some plays,” head coach Bruce Cassidy said following Friday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena. “He had that injury in the middle of camp. We tried to move him around the lineup but it didn’t work out.

“For me, there’s not a lot of knowledge [about Agostino beforehand], but from what I did see, he’s a smart player. We’re looking to upgrade speed in our lineup and that’s an area where we think we have a few people in front of him.”

Including injuries, the Bruins roster stands at 31 players (18 forwards, 10 defensemen, 3 goaltenders).

Anton Khudobin will start Saturday’s preseason finale, while many of the veterans, including Zdeno Chara, won’t be traveling to Chicago. Peter Cehlarik, who was a full participant for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury during the summer, will join that list of players not making the trip to the Windy City.
