Game Day Preview: Bruins vs. Devils

After a long week featuring three games and five points against the Canadiens, the scorching Bruins caught a two-day rest period. They’re back at TD Garden Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Devils and a chance to extend their points streak to 17 games — one game longer than their Presidents’ Trophy-winning 2014 season.

The loss of Charlie McAvoy, who’s out for at least two weeks following a successful heart procedure, is an obstacle.

“Charlie’s doing very well…I think he’s actually been released from the hospital,” Bruce Cassidy said ahead of Tuesday’s game. “…We’ll adjust the pairs so it best suits us, but we got six guys who are real comfortable and that’s what you need to win. It’s nice to have Kevan [Miller] back and healthy and ready to go.”

The Devil who would’ve given McAvoy the most trouble, Taylor Hall, is out with a hand injury. New Jersey is on the tail end of a back-to-back without its most prolific scorer, but the Metropolitan Division’s second place team is going to put up a fight.

Still, as David Pastrnak laughed when asked about facing a Metro Division team after Dec. 16’s overtime loss to the Rangers: “They’re just people.”

    Bruins-Devils storylines

    – As mentioned above, Hall is out with a hand injury. The former Oiler leads the team with 48 points (17 goals, 31 assists) — next up is Jesper Bratt with 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists). Needless to say, expect a little more effort from the Devils offensively. They dropped a 3-0 decision to the Red Wings in Hall’s first game out Monday night.

    – “Grz[elcyk] and Miller have been together all year, we like that pair, so we’ll see how it works out,” Cassidy said regarding his adjustments to the lineup. “We can always move Kevan up with Zee [Chara] if we see something that’s not working out, but that’s how we’ll start it.”

    – Brandon Carlo had a solid outing in Saturday’s win over the Habs with a plus-three rating in 15:27 of ice time. Some leftover confidence and the opportunity to play alongside Chara could be a recipe for success for the 21-year-old.

“We developed a lot of chemistry last year,” Carlo said about skating with Chara. “…I know it’s a great opportunity for me again. Ultimately I just want to fill the shoes of Charlie. I think with injuries last year you realized everybody within our organization can play.”

    – Cory Schneider returned to the lineup for the Devils Monday night after missing a few games to illness. The 31-year-old has a .915 save percentage and a  2.75 goals against average through 34 games this season.
