Last time out, the Bruins did something that hasn’t been done since the Bobby Orr era. Their 3-2 win over the Senators in Ottawa extended their point streak to 18 straight games (14-0-4) matching the 1968-69 Bruins for second-most in franchise history.

Tuesday night, in their first game since the All-Star break, the Bruins look to get one step closer toward the franchise-best 23-game point streak set by the 1940-41 squad. They’ll have to do it against an Anaheim Ducks squad that has won seven straight over the Black and Gold dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Anaheim comes in on its own hot streak with a 10-4-1 mark in its last 15 games. Even with their hot play of late, the Ducks are still on the outside looking in of a playoff spot in a crowded Western Conference.

Former Ducks netminder Anton Khudobin will get the nod, while Charlie McAvoy (heart), Noel Acciari (lower-body) and Brad Marchand (suspension) will be out again. This makes the task even harder for Bruce Cassidy and company as they look to end their January slate on another high note.

Bruins-Ducks storylines

– The Bruins enter the next man up phase for the second straight week. They fared well in the first game without McAvoy as Tuukka Rask and company eeked out a 3-2 win over the Devils with the veterans leading the way. Without Marchand, McAvoy and Acciari again two nights later, the Bruins dug deep against the Senators as Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen scored pivotal goals to edge their Atlantic Division rivals, 3-2. That philosophy needs to carry over against a defensively structured — and healthier — Ducks squad that ranks 10th in goals against per game (2.72) and ninth in penalty kill percentage (82.5).

– Just think where the Bruins could’ve been had the snowball effect continued after their last loss to the Ducks on Nov. 15. The Black and Gold looked lost in the 4-2 mid-November setback in Anaheim and appeared to be heading in a tough direction. Since then they’ve gotten healthier — with Marchand, David Krejci, David Backes, Adam McQuaid and Ryan Spooner returning — and Bruce Cassidy has been able to showcase the B’s depth on a nightly basis. It’s all led to the Bruins being the hottest team in the NHL thanks to their 23-3-4 mark since their ugly outing in Anaheim. Not bad for a team that was written off in mid-November.
