Bruins continuing to find ways to win

Thursday night at TD Garden in the third period of a tied game the Boston Bruins used power play goals from Carl Soderberg and Dougie Hamilton 1:09 apart to extend their lead to two in what was a 5-2 victory, their fourth in a row.

On Monday with the New Jersey Devils skating on that very same ice, the Bruins used two quick goals at the end of the second period to sway momentum in their favor and help send the Black and Gold to their fifth straight win.

    See a common theme here?

Seth Griffith and Reilly Smith both scored their fourth goals of the season 1:20 apart to help lift the Bruins past the Devils, 4-2.

As the Bruins remain without guys like Zdeno Chara, David Krejci, and Kevan Miller, just to name a few, they continue to find ways to win. Multiple goals in short spans have sparked the B’s in their last two victories.

“Yeah, that’s important I think. Any time a goal is scored, whether it’s the first minute of a period or the last minute, I think it can kill a team or it can bring a team up,” Krug said on the momentum the late second period tallies gave them. “For us it definitely helped raise our game, for sure.

Whether it’s two goals in under two minutes, or an overtime victory, the Bruins will take wins however they can get them. Not only are the Black and Gold winners of five straight, but they have moved to 6-1 without Chara.

Much credit has to be given to the Bruins’ defense. Since the trade of Boychuk, all eyes have been on the defensemen during a nightly basis. Add in the injury to the workhorse called Chara and the pressure on the back end really increases.

The Bruins allowed 28 shots Monday night, but did a very good job limiting the chances the Devils had. Rask has been very impressed with the defense in front of him during the five-game winning streak.

“Really good. We’re eliminating chances we want to eliminate. Making those little plays around the net and taking their sticks away and stuff,” Rask said. “It’s been paying off lately. I feel like we’re really taking steps in the right direction.”

Another key to the Bruins success of late has been the play of the Bergeron line. Combining for five points against the Devils, Bergeron and company continue to get the job done.

“I don’t know, the pucks [are] going in,” Bergeron stated. “I mean it’s plain and simple I think. When you do that, you gets some confidence and you get on a roll and I think for us it’s about not just offensively but it’s really about, you know, in our zone, taking care of the puck and go in the offense– creating some offense out of it. I think we gotta keep doing that if we want to be successful and we all know that. Me, Brad [Marchand] and Reilly [Smith], we have been doing that last year as well. We gotta keep doing the same thing.”

Finding different ways to win hockey games is a sign of a good team, the Bruins are doing that now. How good of a team they really are remains to be seen.
