Chalk up another member of the Boston Bruins on the injury list.

Earlier today, Bruins’ General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced that defenseman Adam McQuaid is out 3-4 weeks with a shoulder strain. McQuaid left during the first period of yesterday’s 3-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets after a hit by Chris Thoburn and did not return.

The third-year defenseman is returning to Boston for treatment.

“Adam [McQuaid] sustained a shoulder strain and will return to Boston for further evaluation by the Bruins medical staff,” Chiarelli said in the statement. “It is expected that he may be out 3-4 weeks.”

In 25 games with the Black and Gold, McQuaid compiled 49 penalty minutes and five fighting majors to go along with his goal and three assists. It’s been a rough go for the 26-year old, who recovered from a blood clot just before the start of training camp.

With McQuaid out, fellow defenseman Aaron Johnson will likely fill his spot in the lineup. Johnson has five games under his belt with Boston and is a minus-1 – having not tallied a single point – with four penalty minutes.

McQuaid’s shoulder strain is another blow to the Bruins’ injury list that includes David Krejci (day-to-day, knee) and Chris Kelly (out indefinitely, broken tibia).

With a thin defensive core, the lack of depth on the third line and the injuries, perhaps Chiarelli will pull the trigger on a trade sooner rather than later.
