Despite refresher, fatigued Bruins hardly resting

No one in the Bruins’ organization was making excuses for their embarrassing 4-0 loss to the Islanders on Monday afternoon. The confusion over how they can play so well in certain spurts of the season, yet play so poorly against a team in the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings continues to be a head-scratcher around The Hub of Hockey.

There was one theory, though, that head coach Claude Julien threw out during his postgame press conference as his team continues their busy slate with the condensed schedule.

“This is really the first year, for me as well, going through a condensed schedule, and I’m certainly not using that as an excuse, is it fatigue? But we were flat tonight,” a perplexed Julien said following their second loss of the season to the Islanders at TD Garden.

“How do you explain it? I don’t know. I know that it’s frustrating. I know that it’s disappointing. That’s all I can say.”

Instead of taking the ice for their scheduled practice, the Bruins canceled their on-ice session at Warrior Ice Arena on Tuesday. Only Jimmy Hayes, Zane McIntyre and Matt Beleskey (who could return to the lineup as soon as tomorrow) took the ice prior to the Bruins’ upcoming matchup with the Red Wings on Wednesday.

“It’s hardly the only reason [why we lost to the Islanders]. I think there is fatigue in there, but I don’t think that was a sole reason for yesterday,” Julien said. “We’re not using it as an excuse, but I did sense fatigue [on Monday] and I sensed fatigue this morning too.”

“I don’t think it was a good night sleep after a game like that,” David Krejci noted. “But here we are, looking forward to tomorrow to get a win and get on a roll.”

In hopes of overcoming more disappointment, the Bruins are looking to correct some wrongs and put together consistent performances.

The Bruins are in a stretch of playing on every other day until next weekend’s all-star break. After the needed breather, the Bruins hope to be recharged and ready to perform for their final regular season contest at the historic Joe Louis Arena.

“All the teams are in the same situation,” Patrice Bergeron said about the condensed schedule. “It’s about managing and find ways to be at your best every night. You know, if you ask [about the fatigue] maybe [the schedule] is a part of it, but you can’t just put the blame on that and we need to show up every game.”

Tuesday was hardly a day of relaxation for the Black and Gold, however. Rather, it was a day to watch film from the previous day, emphasize priorities and look ahead to Wednesday night.

The last thing the Bruins need is another flat performance against the lowly Red Wings, who are coming off wins against two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference in the Penguins and Canadiens.

“I think it’s one of those [days] where you have to regroup and recharge the batteries and feel better,” said Bergeron. “Maybe a little bit of fatigue was part of it yesterday, and you use a day like today to look forward and look at videos and be better for the next day because everything happens so fast.”

So fast where the Maple Leafs and Senators – both with six games in hand – can climb within a point of the Bruins for second in the Atlantic Division with respective wins over the Sabres and Blues on Tuesday. Yet another reason why the Bruins can rest easy midway through their 2016-17 campaign.
